Player overview

Dominik Nitsche is a German professional poker player known for his tournament success and online career. He is a prolific online poker grinder, earning over $8 million since he began playing in 2006. His tournament winnings exceed $19 million, putting him in the top 50 highest-earning pro poker players.

For notable tournament wins, Nitsche has four World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets and one World Poker Tour (WPT) title. He is also a regular at High Roller Tournaments like the European Poker Tour and the Super High Roller Bowl.

Having won two of his bracelets at 23, he also holds the record for the youngest player to win three WSOP bracelets, beating previous holder Phil Ivey by three years. Outside of his tournament career, he has a poker training app and YouTube channel titled DTO poker and is an ambassador for 888Poker.

Early life

Dominik Nitsche was born on October 11, 1990, in Minden, Germany. He grew up accustomed to various card games from an early age since his parents were fond of them too.

His first introduction to poker came after seeing an advertisement for an online poker site at school. Initially, Nitsche wanted to become a professional footballer. However, he soon realized that his natural gift wasn’t athleticism but math. He frequently played video games as a teenager and got recommended poker by some of his friends.

Nitsche’s online career began when he was 16, below the minimum age to play online poker. This didn’t stop him from creating an account to play online under his mother’s name. He amassed millions playing online, and this success inspired his older brother to play poker too.

His brother was talented but ultimately could not handle the natural variance of playing poker. Nitsche had the mental fortitude to remain unbothered by his losses, which became a large part of his tournament success.

Early career

Like many other modern-day pros, Nitsche’s career started online. He began playing when he turned 16 in 2006, despite being underaged. Playing under his mother’s name, he scored many impressive finishes in online poker tournaments. By the end of high school, he had earned millions just from playing online.

While this insinuates that making millions at a young age can be possible when you play poker online, many poker sites require players to be at least 18 years old.

Thanks to his years of experience playing online, Nitsche’s live career began with a spectacular win at the April 2009 Latin American Poker Tour Main Event for a whopping $381,030. In October, he placed second at the WPT Marrakech € 9,000 No Limit Hold’em – High Roller for $120,885.

After this, he collected a slew of five-digit scores until 2011, when he took down the Merit Middle East Poker Championship and Merit Summer Open for $164,100 and $123,366.

Nitsche’s first WSOP bracelet came the following year after he won the 43rd WSOP $ 1,000 No Limit Hold’em (Event #59) for $654,797. He proceeded to claim a World Poker Tour title as well, winning the WPT Emperors Palace Poker Classic Main Event for $206,153.

Nitsche placed third in the 2013 WSOP Europe for $540,664. Then, in 2014, he scored two more bracelets. One from the WSOP National Championship and one from the 45th WSOP $1,000 No Limit Hold’em (Event #21) earned him over $300,000.

Peak years

From there, Nitsche continued his impressive streak of success with a second-place finish at the 2015 Bellagio Cup for $479,732. He won a European Poker Tour title in 2016, taking down the Dublin High Roller event for $176,177.

2017 was a fantastic year for Nitsche. It saw him take third in the Asia Championship of Poker (ACOP) for $347,795 and fifth in Poker Masters for $178,500. However, both wins pale compared to Nitsche’s fourth WSOP bracelet. He won the €111,111 No Limit Hold’em – High Roller for One Drop (Event #10) for $4,064,026, his largest-ever tournament cash by far.

The following year, he claimed another seven-figure score, finishing fourth in the Super High Roller Bowl China for $1,669,527. The same year, he was just short of receiving another one after taking fourth in the partypoker MILLIONS tournament for $ 986,923.

In the middle of 2018, he had a streak of six-figure scores in the Aria and Bellagio High Roller tournaments. He finished the year off with an astounding five-tournament streak of six-figure scores ranging from $123,359 to $654,528 in tournaments like the WSOP Europe and World Poker Tour.

Nitsche has appeared on the hit poker TV show Poker After Dark, battling other notable pros like Phil Hellmuth. His online winnings are also nothing to scoff at, with over $7 million on PokerStars and over $1 million on Full Tilt Poker.

In May 2020, he even claimed a Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) title on PokerStars, winning the $530 NLHE event for $82,365.
